Get to know Château-d’Oex Ski Resort

Bordering Switzerland, Château d’Oex is a charming resort with a rich history, famously associated with British actor David Niven, known for his role in The Pink Panther and his novel The Moon’s a Balloon, which some believe was inspired by the resort’s balloon festival. While the resort offers a more intimate selection of activities compared to others, visitors can still enjoy excellent skiing, snowboarding, and an array of lively festivals and fascinating museums in town.

Skiing and activities in Château-d’Oex

In a nutshell, Château d’Oex is not the resort for you if you’re looking to have a dozen different activities to keep you busy. So visit if your purpose is skiing. Or snowboarding. But that’s it.

There are a few restaurants and bars to go to for food and drinks after skiing. And, if you’re visiting town, there are some museums, festivals, and local shops. In the following section, we go into more detail.

Château-d’Oex skiing: an overview

Château d’Oex is an okay ski resort. It has a total of 14 lifts, 20 pistes, and 250 kilometres. As previously stated, this resort is more suitable for skiers that are beginners due to the altitude of the ski area and the limited lifts. However, there is some terrain for the more advanced ones. If you’re just entering the ski world and want to perfect your skills, French Ski School is a 90-year-old school that has been passing on the love of skiing to students, including kids and adults. Many courses are available to cater to your goals.

Non-skiing activities in Château-d’Oex

The Château d’Oex ski resort offers other activities in addition to the skiing one. Still on the slopes, you can try snowboarding. Other non-ski activities are limited. The ski resort doesn’t offer too much variety for non-skiers. However, visit the village, and you will have panoramic views, and museums to go to!

Things to do in Château-d’Oex village

Château-d’Oex is famous for the first air balloon fight. If you would like to discover a little bit more, you can visit the Espace Balloon, a small museum where you get to be surrounded with air balloons.

Bowling is another activity in town to consider. If you would like to play a game or two, the Bowling à Gogo is the place of choice, and it’s open from June to August.

You can also visit the military forts in La Tine, where you get to see the second-world war tunnels guided by a professional tourist guide. If you choose to do this, don’t forget your headlamp!

Family-friendly and kids’ fun in Château-d’Oex

If you and your children enjoy skiing, Château d’Oex is ideal. The Swiss Ski School offers skiing and snowboarding lessons for both children and adults. The instructors will tailor the courses to your goals.

Off the slopes, families can go into the village and explore around to have a look at the panoramic views. The Espace Balloon is a nice thing to do with the kids. The museum is very attractive and famous among families.
