Verbier travel guide

About Verbier

Known for luxury, a lively apres-ski scene and daring slopes, Verbier is a world-class destination for younger crowds and adrenaline junkies. With its high altitude making it a snow-sure resort, Verbier has an extensive range of slopes to challenge advanced and expert skiers, as well as steep descents and exhilarating off-piste opportunities for thrill-seekers.

Situated in the canton of the Valais, in the southwest of Switzerland, Verbier is bordered by France to the west and Italy to the south. The Swiss ski resort is part of the 4 Vallées, one of the largest linked ski areas that is located entirely in Switzerland. Perched on a south-west facing plateau, Verbier boasts breathtaking views of the Alps.

If you love to ski or snowboard off piste, then Verbier’s the place for you. Great freeriding, stunning views and an apres scene that parties hard.

Skiing in Verbier

At an altitude of 1500m, Verbier guarantees snow-sure, bluebird skiing throughout the season, boasting one of the best snow records in the Alps. And in recent years, nearby Le Châble has also become a popular base for exploring the area.

However Verbier truly shines for advanced and expert skiers, with 410km of runs and 92 lifts. While it was once daunting for beginners, that has changed with the establishment of some excellent ski schools have started up, offering the chance for beginners and intermediates to enjoy the pistes. Head for La Chaux and it’s nursery slopes and mellow greens.

Leisurely skiers might enjoy cruising the blues before hitting up the mountainside cafes in the sun, but really, Verbier is really for powderhounds seeking perfect off piste runs and intermediates looking to step up. Head for Mont Fort, the highest point in the Four Valleys at 3 330m, which boasts the largest array of easily reachable advanced and expert terrain of any ski resort in the Alps.

Things to do in Verbier

While Verbier is all about snowsports, there are some off-slope attractions too. Thrill-seekers head for the Mont 4 Zipline, the highest in Europe. 1 400m long with a descending elevation of 383m, it allows you to reach a speed of 100 km/h!

Those looking to try something new, make their way to the snowpark or have a go at ski cross or speed skiing. And it’s well worth checking out the toboggan run in La Tzoumaz too. Families might be tempted to spend some time at the outdoor ice rink at the Park de Loisirs, which features a 3m tall ice slide and magical ice path. From dog sledding to snowshoeing to paragliding to snow tours, there’s plenty to keep you entertained off piste.

Nightlife

Verbier isn’t just about hitting the slopes hard – it’s about partying even harder after dark. Its apres ski scene is legendary, attracting weekend revellers from nearby Geneva and partygoers from around the world, drawn to the resort by its reputation for partying hard into the wee small hours.

From lively slope-side venues that get the party started in the afternoons to the numerous pubs and bars in Verbier that come alive in the evenings, Verbier is the ultimate apres-ski destination. We reckon there are more bars and clubs in Verbier than in its top 10 rival resorts combined. Check out hotspots like Ice Cube and Bar 1936, with their DJ sets kicking things off in the afternoon, or head to the legendary Pub Mont Fort and award-winning Farinet Bar for a night to remember!

Verbier is a village in the canton of Valais in southwest Switzerland. It’s bordered by France to the west and Italy to the south.

Renowned for its breathtaking vistas, rich resort culture, as well as world-beating ski areas, Verbier has a well-earned reputation for being one of the premier off-piste resorts in the world. And did we mention its lively après-ski scene and luxury accommodations?

With its high altitude, Verbier has a snow-sure ski resort, with optimal conditions from December through to April. The Mont Fort glacier is open in the summer months.

The most reliable snow conditions tend to be in mid-February to mid-March, with consistent snow cover and longer daylight hours. However, the early season is often when fresh powder is at its deepest.

Verbier is suitable for beginners as long as they choose the terrain carefully. Beginners can hone their skills on gentle slopes and cruisey blue runs. Some say that Verbier can be confusing to navigate so a clear piste map will be worth its weight in gold.

La Piste de L’Ours is the longest ski run in Verbier which is 15km long.

As a top-tier destination renowned for attracting the rich and the famous, Verbier stands out as one of the more expensive resorts in the Alps. Food, entertainment, activities and accommodation can be pretty steep. However, some would argue that it’s worth the splurge to experience one of Europe’s most exclusive ski resorts.

You can expect to pay around CHF7-CHF10 (£6-£8) for a pint of beer, which is pretty standard in Switzerland.

That all depends on what you’re looking for. Verbier Central is the place for traditional Alpine charm, right in the heart of the apres-ski action. Choose from charming chalets to five star luxury hotels. Les Creux and Savoleyres are perfect for families looking for ski-to-the-door accommodation. For budget-friendly options, explore Le Chable’s range of chalets and hotels. La Tzoumaz boasts some great apartments and chalets, practically next door to the lifts, that won’t break the bank.
