Val d’Isere travel guide

The resort

Situated 1,850m above sea level, the charming village of Val d’Isere and its vast ski area has plenty of challenges in store, even for non-skiers. Together with Tignes, Val d’Isere forms the impressive Espace Killy ski area, boasting a whopping 300km of downhill skiing and 150 pistes linked by 90 ski lifts. There are well-groomed pistes aplenty, as well as some stunning off-piste areas for exploration.

As one of the highest and most snow-sure ski resorts in France, the season in Val d’Isere runs from late November through to the beginning of May, which means that during the entire winter season, you are surrounded by a fluffy white blanket of snow.

Skiing in Val d’Isere

Val d’Isere offers some of the best skiing in the Alps. With plenty of black runs, the resort is a destination for the expert and advanced skier wanting to push themselves. However, the new beginners area at the top of the Solaise and the winding green and blue runs into La Daille provides a great place to learn.

Val d’Isere’s ski area offers over 300km of piste skiing and some of Europe’s most spectacular scenery. The resort itself covers 154km of skiable area, with 33 lifts. With a resort height of 1 850m and its highest lift at 3 456m, the vertical drop is a dizzying 1 900m. Val d’Isere’s longest piste is an impressive 3.5km. The resort offers 11 gentle green pistes, 38 demanding blue, 30 challenging red and 10 black for the most advanced. With various beginner slopes and the challenging steep and deep runs, Val d’Isere has something for every level of skiing ability. 

 

Things to do in Val d’Isere

Of course, the main draw for people coming to Val d’Isere in winter is skiing and snowboarding. But it’s an outdoor activities paradise, with the town and surrounding areas offering activities for things to do for every ability, every age and every interest. 

 

  • Drive a dog sled or skidoo, or take a more sedate horse-drawn ride. Fancy something to clear out the cobwebs? The BMW sponsored ice driving circuit in La Daille is a must-do for any petrol-heads.
  • For a different perspective, take to the skies for a bird’s eye view of the mountains with a helicopter tour or book a tandem paragliding flight.
  • Disappear into a nature for a while on a snowshoeing or ski-touring adventure, and see a side of the mountain most skiers will never see.
  • Check out climbing at Via Ferrata, following marked routes through the mountains, helped along by steps, bridges and ladders whilst being roped up for extra safety. Or  what about ice climbing for an added adrenaline rush?
  • Enjoy the mountains as a non-skier by buying a pedestrian lift pass and enjoy one of the many walking trails that take you through some gorgeous scenery, including a frozen waterfall, wildlife and much more. One for a blue-sky day, for sure.

You could argue that Val d’Isere is always busy, but Christmas to the end of the first week in January and early to mid-February (French school holidays) tend to be the busiest times.
