Chamonix has everything from five-star hotels and luxury catered chalets to budget rental studios. If you’re after best bang for your buck, a small self-catering apartment could be ideal, particularly with Chamonix’s markets and many food shops there.

Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in the French Alps, famous for its spectacular and uncompromising mountain ranges. Skiers and snowboarders come here to test their mettle on some of the highest peaks in Europe, including Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. Yes, there is! The Chamonix tourist office can be found at the Place du Triangle de l’Amitié, the main square adjacent to the principal church, town hall and ski school office. It’s open daily in high season and can offer maps and information as well as assistance to make your visit enjoyable.

Skiing in Chamonix’s sweet spot is usually from February to March. The snow has usually packed down by this time, while the pistes are kept in good shape, providing perfect conditions for most skiers. December can often bring good snow at the beginning of the season, while January can be colder but, generally speaking, snowy. If you like the slopes quieter, don’t go during the French school holidays in February. Spring skiing is also awesome in March and April, with warmer weather and longer days.

Yes! From November through May, you can usually expect decent snow coverage, especially at altitudes above about 2,000 meters. Chamonix benefits from plenty of reliable snow covering thanks to the many glaciers in the Mont Blanc Resort.

Chamonix’s most famous ski run is the Vallée Blanche. It’s a stunning 23-kilometer descent with a 3,000-meter vertical drop, beginning where the Aiguille du Midi cable car lets out at 3,842 meters (12,605 feet). This glacial course provides a once-in-a-lifetime a chance to admire the wild majesty of the Mont Blanc massif. Depending on Snow conditions, you may have to take the Montenvers train back to town, but the recent Montenvers Glacier cable car means you’ll be returning with even more ease.

Absolutely! Chamonix may be known for its intimidating off-piste terrain, but plenty of beginner options exist too. Magic carpets and button lifts are also scattered around areas like Planards, Sayoard and the lower part of Le Tour, where the basics can be mastered. As your confidence grows, venture onto green and blue slopes at Brevent, Flerge and Le Tour.

While it caters to every level, Chamonix is especially popular with adventure seekers eager to visit off-piste and backcountry terrain. There are limitless opportunities on the slopes for those who seek to challenge themselves, which make the resort a playground for advanced skiers and snowboarders. But with many beginner-friendly areas, there is the perfect run for everyone.

If you’re going off-piste or backcountry, hiring a guide is very highly recommended. Having a professional guide helps you interpret safely through the vast and varied terrain of the Chamonix Valley and ensures you get the most from your experience.

Yes! In summer or winter, Chamonix has a good range of family-friendly activities. The town offers restaurants of every kind, from takeaways to fine dining, ideal for family meals. La Folie Douce features an awesome kids’ play area, so parents can take advantage of apres-ski fun. For skiing, Les Houches is a great area for beginners and families, a short bus ride from town center.

There are many accommodation options in Chamonix with something for every preference and budget. There airbnbs, self-catered apartments, hotels, and chalets.

Is it easy to rent ski equipment in Chamonix? There are plenty of rental shops in the valley from skis and snowboards to helmets and boots. From high end gear to budget alternatives, there’s something here to fit your needs.

Yes! Access to all Chamonix ski areas (up to Grands Montets summit) using the slopes from 1,000 to 2,765 meters (3,281 to 9,072 feet) create the Chamonix LePass. For those wishing to stay longer or those wishing to ski further afield, the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass grants access to Swiss, French and Italian ski areas including Courmayeur, Crans Montana, Morzine and Megeve.

Chamonix is host to a variety of world-renowned events throughout the year. In winter, the Kandahar Alpine Ski World Cup in Les Houches draws elite athletes and fans. Events such as the Climbing World Championships, the Cosmo Jazz Festival, the Chamonix Ultimate Music Festival, the Chamonix Marathon, the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) take place during the summer. This makes Chamonix an exciting place to visit in summer or winter.

Absolutely! There’s no shortage of non-skiers’ activities in Chamonix. For a spectacular view of Mont Blanc — and even a hint of Italy — take the Aiguille du Midi cable car up 3,842 meters (12,605 feet). The Train du Montenvers Mer de Glace is also a must-do, as it takes visitors on a cog train ride to the Mer de Glace glacier official tourist information; the longest glacier in the French Alps at more than 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) long. Such experiences offer unforgettable adventures off the slopes.

To get to St. Gervais from Chamonix, the best way is to buy the Mont Blanc Unlimited lift pass, which covers this area, / or a single-day ticket to use the information desks if you’re using just Chamonix Pass. Take a bus from Chamonix to Le Fayet, and transfer to a local bus to the nearest ski lift (the Bettex Gondola). Alternatively, Chamonix buses provide a winter service from Chamonix Sud Bus Station straight to the foot of the Bettex Gondola. It takes a little over an hour, and buses run up to four times a day.

Chamonix does have a reputation for being one of the more expensive resorts but it is not the most expensive. Resorts such as St. Moritz, Val d’Isère and Courchevel 1850 are generally more expensive. Chamonix’s status as one of the oldest, most famous ski destinations and its picturesque location at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif add to its costs. But, with a range of overnight lodgings and dining options, you’re sure to find something within your budget.

It is possible to travel by train from London to Chamonix, though it requires multiple connections. Take the Eurostar first to Paris or Lille. From Paris, you can take a train to Annecy, and then transfer to either a regional train to Le Fayet or a direct Mont Blanc Express train to Chamonix. Or, if you change at Lille’s international station, you can go to Geneva. Take the Leman Express from Geneva to Fayet, then transfer to the Mont Blanc Express, or book a Mountain Drop-offs transfer from Geneva airport or main train station.

Chamonix is considered a premium destination, but it offers a range of options to fit different budgets. While it may be more expensive than some other resorts, it’s not as pricey as luxury resorts like St. Moritz or Courchevel 1850. Chamonix’s long-standing reputation, extensive facilities, and proximity to Mont Blanc contribute to its costs, but careful planning can help you manage expenses effectively.
