Andermatt is located in the centre of the Swiss Alps; for that reason, it’s easily accessible from Zurich and Milan. The Alpine ski resort is well known for its snow reliability and depth and for its high mountains like the Gemsstock one. Many activities in and out of the slopes are available. Andermatt is also a family-friendly resort with activities and restaurants that are child-friendly.

In addition to skiing in Andermatt, other activities are available on and off the slopes. Some of them are sledding, ski tours, hiking, and many activities for the kids, such as designated children’s slopes. The ski resort is also family-friendly, providing a ski school for children and adults.

“Swiss Ski School Andermatt” is a multilingual school, providing lessons to put you on the slopes in three days. After a full day of skiing, there are many bars and restaurants open and with easy access from the slopes. We will get into more detail in the below sections.

Andermatt skiing: an overview

The ski has three locations—Andermatt, Sedan, and Disentis. With a total of 180 kilometres, Andermatt provides you with 33 lifts throughout the slopes to make the moving more efficient and take you to the highest of the mountains. 3,000 metres of altitude to be specific. There’s a training centre available with courses to help you prepare for the higher mountains, like the Gemsstock one.
Now, the slopes are adapted to every skill level. The blue pistes (57.5 km) are ideal for the beginner skiers; the red (84 km) and black (37 km) are for the more advanced ones. In addition to these, there’s yellow pistes (16.5 km) made for the free rides.

Non-skiing activities in Andermatt

The Swiss Alps aren’t just about skiing. Many non-skiing activities, like sliding, are available to visitors. Gondola lifts are there waiting for you to take you to the sliding areas. Different runs are available, and you can rent a toboggan right on the spot. All runs are considered easy and are from 2,8 to 4,7 kilometres of distance.
Snowshoeing is an alternative option. The guided tours take a maximum of two hours and 195 km of distance. There are shorter ones with just 87 km of distance as well as longer ones with 300 m of distance. A rental sports shop is accessible if you don’t have equipment.
Winter walks signed with posts throughout are also in the list of the non-ski activities available for you to choose from.

Things to do in Andermatt village

If you have enough skiing and want to visit the Andermatt village, there are many activities waiting for you. If you like to know about the history of the village, you can visit the Suworow Monument and Schoellenen Gorge, the place of the fight between French and Russians.
The Victorinox Store is also very interesting, where you can have a look at the traditional Swiss products. Lastly, the Furka steam railway is a must-go if you want to be taken back in time and experience the routes between the mountains as well as to the highest points of 2160 metres. It takes around two hours and has a total of 18 km. Please note that you need to get the tickets in advance

Family-friendly and kids’ fun in Andermatt

If you are taking the kids on holidays to a ski resort, why not engage them in some ski lessons? Kids learn faster when they are younger, and many schools are available with personalised lessons, depending on skill levels. Individual or group lessons for the whole family are available. Swiss Snowsports School Andermatt It’s an option.
Built in 2022, The Matti Family Paradise is an adventure park located near the Gütsch Express station, giving easy access to get there. Within this park, the whole family can participate in activities such as climbing. There is also a restaurant within it called “Matty Family Restaurant” with an indoor playground in case you catch a colder day. This is available from June to October.

The Himalayan bar is a wonderful option for après-ski. The bar/restaurant serves home-made food and Swiss food. All products are regional, and you can always do takeout as well. The environment of the restaurant is welcoming and rustic.

The Piste Bar Rondodrom is another unique bar with a 360° view. The bar is located directly on the slopes by the Gemsstock gondola lift. This one is open only in the winter season. They also have music, so you can dance if you feel like it.

It’s located at the Gemsstock cable car, and it’s famous for its Swiss hash browns. The restaurant has a rooftop where you can enjoy the panoramic views of the mountains.

The Restaurant Wachthuus is another beautiful mountain restaurant. They are famous for their cappuccinos and waffles! The Restaurant Sudada is another option; it’s open from December to April, and it’s located by the Dieni-Oberalppass skiing area. Famous for their house specialties, wines, and the “chicken in a basket,” is also very well known in the restaurant.
